Mati pasti akan tiba. Firman Allah S.W.T. yang bermaksud "Setiap yang bernyawa pasti akan merasai mati."

Samada seseorang itu mahu mati atau tidak, kematian itu pasti akan datang. Tidak akan terlewat atau dipercepatkan walau sesaat. Sebab itu, dalam ajaran Islam, mengingati mati merupakan sesuatu yang dituntut. Mengingati mati mempunyai kelebihan yang tersendiri bagi orang yang hidup di dunia dan istimewanya untuk akhirat kelak.

Rasulullah s.a.w. sendiri sentiasa menyebut tentang kematian dan tidak kurang dari 20 kali dalam sehari. Malah Baginda pernah menyarankan kepada umatnya yang bermaksud, "Perbanyakkan mengingat-ingat tentang perkara yang menghapuskan kelazatan (maut)."

Ketika Rasulullah s.a.w. ditanya tentang siapakah orang yang pintar di antara manusia, jawab baginda, "Mereka itu ialah orang yang memperbanyakkan mengingati mati dan sentiasa bersedia untuk menghadapi kematian."

Sabda Rasulullah s.a.w. yang bermaksud, "Sesungguhnya orang mukmin itu, ketika dijemput oleh maut, digembirakan dengan memperolehi rahmat Allah, maka diapun amat suka untuk bertemu Allah, maka Allah S.W.T. pun suka bertemu dengannya. Manakala orang kafir pula ketika dijemput oleh maut, diberitakan kepadanya akan mendapat azab Allah, lalu dia pun benci bertemu Allah, maka Allah pun benci bertemu dengannya."
